LIVING WITH THE ENGLISH |
|||
Alex is now four years old and exceeded all my expectations of a loving, intelligent companion. She has far surpassed by hopes in terms of her bird instinct and desire. Though neither of her parents had been worked on birds, she shows extreme birdiness and a very acceptable soft mouth. She has one qualifying score to go for her AKC title of Junior Hunter. Her retrieving instincts were obviously hard-wired, as she carried objects in her mouth practically from the day she was born. Though, as I was warned, the English have a "mind of their own," she is absolutely wonderful to live with. She does listen and has a strong desire to please though you must establish yourself as boss. The English certainly have entertaining personalities and keep you on your toes. She has been shown in conformation, mostly oddly enough in "American bred." I do believe in the next few years she will begin to come into her own as her breeder predicted she would. In the last year since her first litter, her body and coat has filled out so she doesn't look so "naked" standing next to her American "cousins." |
